Power outages hinder water supply in Tshwane

Tshwane said the Laudium reservoir had since the stages of recovery by Rand Water depleted its water load while the Garsfontein reservoir was at 20 percent capacity.

Water Board, Rand Water on Saturday announced that it was observing little flow in its systems, affecting reservoirs such as Laudium and Garsfontein in Tshwane.

Rand Water General Operations Manager Simon Xaba has since notified Ekurhuleni, Tshwane, Govan Mbeki, Victor Khanye, Thembisile Hani and Lesedi municipality that the board was still struggling to recover water due to multiple power failures.

“Following the technical letter dated June 22, 2023, Rand Water is hereby notifying the municipality that the system is still struggling to recover.

“Balancing of the systems is still being done and as a result there will be challenges of inconsistent supply.”

Tshwane on reservoirs affected

Tshwane said the Laudium reservoir had since the stages of recovery by Rand Water depleted its water load while the Garsfontein reservoir was at 20 percent capacity.

Metro spokesperson Selby Bokaba said the Tshwane water supply continued to be strained on July 1 and reasons were attributed to power failures impacting on the Rand Water infrastructure.

“Tshwane has been cautioned by the water utility, Rand Water, that their system is struggling to recover following a number of power failures and trips experienced during the month of June at the Vereeniging and Zuikerbosch Water Treatment Plants as well as at the Palmiet, Eikenhof and Mapleton Booster Pumping Stations.”

Bokaba said this brought inconsistencies in water supply as water supply was not balanced.

“Customers that are supplied by the Brakpan, Vlakfontein, Klipfontein, Hartebeeshoek, Bronberge, Wildebeesfontein, Selcourt, Stompiesfontein Reservoirs will experience low water pressure to no water during the recovery of their system.

“The Rand Water reservoirs supplying Tshwane are Vlakfontein, Klipfontein, Hartebeeshoek and Bronberge affecting regions 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 as well as parts of 5.”
