In the Moot, the action was from Friday, at 18:00 to 06:00 on Saturday morning, AfriForum Oos-Moot neighbourhood watch operations co-ordinator Ruan du Plessis said.

He said 63 neighbourhood watch members and 23 interested parties took part in the action that covered 964km.

Du Plessis said the patrol involved “foot patrols in Codonia Avenue as well as vehicle patrols at all the key points”.

“We also held standing patrols throughout the main access routes through the night.”

He said several incidents were “handled”.

“The metro police handled cases of public drinking as well as a case of people who fought,” he said.

He said they also stumbled on a case of gate motor theft.

The neighbourhood watch thanked everyone involved and several residents expressed their gratitude.

Business owner Chene Schmidt-Dumont said safety was very important.

“I can say with ease that with Friday’s national patrol by AfriForum Oos-Moot neighbourhood watch there was definitely security in Waverley,” she said.

Marius Barnard of Eric Barnard Furniture said: “As a businessman and longtime resident of the Moot, I am very pleased to see how the Afriforum Oos-Moot neighbourhood watch mobilises and works with local security firms as well as the metro police.

A total of 60 neighbourhood watches participated in the patrols across the country, while the 1 224 participants covered 40 299km and dealt with 77 incidents.
