Police arrested five men after an alleged cable theft operation was disrupted in Centurion on September 1.

According to police spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk, officers from the Wierdabrug police station received a tip-off about cable theft taking place around Piet Hugo Street and Willem Botha Drive in Eldoraigne.

“Officers immediately mobilised to the area, supported by several security and law enforcement partners. As members approached, the suspects fled to evade arrest,” said Van Dyk.

Officers subsequently cordoned off the area, and three suspects were apprehended along Willem Botha Drive.

The remaining two suspects attempted to escape in the getaway vehicle, a silver Suzuki Swift.

“Members managed to block the vehicle inside the Wierdapark taxi rank, where the two suspects were subsequently arrested.”

Van Dyk said police seized the vehicle, along with several items believed to have been used in the alleged cable theft.

He said police recovered about 120kg of suspected stolen cable, as well as equipment used to steal cables, breaking implements, false verification documents and Eskom reflective jackets.

The operation involved Wierdabrug SAPS, Bidvest Airwing, Monitor Net, Noordvaal Security, Scorpion Security, FADT, PRSS and Copwatch.

“The investigation remains ongoing as police work to determine whether the suspects can be linked to other cable theft cases.”
