Human Settlements MMC Aaron Maluleka says the Tshwane metro has completed new traffic light installations at the Marabastad Townlands social housing project.

Safety and traffic flow around the development have improved following the completion of the first phase of road infrastructure.

“The traffic lights will improve safety for motorists and pedestrians, regulate traffic entering and leaving the development and make it safer for residents to move through the surrounding area,” says Maluleka.

“For the city, delivering social housing cannot end with providing residents with a place to live. We must also ensure that communities have safe roads, reliable public transport and access to the economic opportunities and services they need.”

Public transport connectivity planned

The municipality is now moving to the next phase to improve public transport connectivity for residents.

Planned infrastructure includes dedicated permanent public transport routes alongside a new bus stop and terminal area.

These facilities will support Tshwane Bus Services (TBS) and the A Re Yeng Bus Rapid Transit system.

Maluleka thanked Housing Company Tshwane for its role in advancing the project, adding that public transport remains the city’s next priority.

“Our next priority is public transport. By improving access to A Re Yeng and TBS, we want residents to move between their homes and economic opportunities safely, reliably and affordably,” says Maluleka. “This is how we build integrated human settlements that restore dignity and improve the everyday lives of residents.”
