The year of the horse brings courage

Chinese communities around the world celebrated the Chinese New Year on Sunday. The Nan Hua Buddhist Temple saw a festival of entertainment to ring in the new year.

On Sunday, Chinese communities around the world celebrated their new year, the Year of the Horse. Festivities took place at the Nan Hua Buddhist Temple in Bronkhorstspruit. The spirit of the horse is recognised to be the Chinese people’s ethos, as it constantly strives to improve itself. The horse is part of a 12-year cycle that makes up the Chinese zodiac. The wood horse took over from the previous year’s water snake.

The celebrations started with fireworks, followed by the dancing of the Chinese dragon and ended with a play-off between three dragons to win the heart of a lover. Other entertainment such as martial arts and dances took place throughout the day at the Chinese Museum.

The Chinese did not disappoint, with colourful, striking costumes lending an air of vibrant festivity to the day’s celebration.
