True Angels on bikes

It is sometimes not so easy to see behind the leather clothes and bikers’ paraphernalia, but the Ladies of Harley are angels in their own right who spend time to do good deeds by supporting those in the community in need.

They are beautiful, intelligent and fun-loving but most of all, they have hearts of gold — and they all ride Harley Davidson motorcycles.

The Pretoria east Ladies of Harley club is galaxies removed from the outlaw bikers’ club the Hell’s Angels, a group in America with which these iconic cycles, with its familiar roar, are most associated with.

The Ladies of Harley do not only take time from their busy schedules to hit the open road on their powerful machines to feel the wind in their hair and the sun on their faces, but every year spend time to support a different charity in the capital.

They have not yet announced the recipients of their generosity for 2015, but last year the group of feisty girls took many underprivileged children under their wings and collected thousands of rand to make their lives better.

Many of the women got together on Saturday when Harley Davidson Pretoria East had the band Beeskraal Revival to entertain hundreds of Harley owners and just fans of the usually chrome embellished motorcycles to celebrate the opening of a new dealership and the new Harley Owners Group, better known as Hog, clubhouse in Lynnwood Road.

The 1965 Oscar winning movie Easy Rider with its theme song Born to be Wild made these motorcycles famous world-wide. Starring Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper, the film was the quintessential American road trip movie in which 1949, 1950 and 1952 Harley Davidson Hydra-Glide bikes were used and which grabbed the imagination of thousands.
