Classic car enthusiasts salivated over their many favourites at a vintage vehicle show at POMC club house in Silverton on Sunday.

The vintage and veteran car and bike day was held as a fundraiser for the Soniyus school for the hearing impaired.

The exhibitors took the enthusiasts for a spin all over Pretoria from the Voortrekker Monument, Freedom Park, Klapperkop, Lollipop roadhouse to the POMC club house.

Vintage and veteran car and bike spokesperson Emil Kuschke said a lot of South Africans did not own these classics as it was also not easy to get them running and on the road.

Kuschke said owners of these old delicate vehicles were very privileged to own such rare equipment.

“It is such a hassle to drive the cars as they have no suspension and modern technology. It takes real skill to drive them.”

Vintage car owner Mouton Lotter said his father and a friend had partnered to rebuild the model A 1930 Ford car in 1959.

“This was two years before I was born.”

Lotter said the car had been in his family since.

“I moved to Pretoria to study at Tuks (University of Pretoria) and used this car to go to school.

“We had lots of fun with the car during my university days.”

Lotter said the car became run down again and his father repaired it again in the year 2000.

He said his father had gifted him the car on his 50th birthday.

Lotter said there was a lot of family attachment to the car.

He said being a member of such a club was exciting and wonderful.

Another vintage car owner Hennie Rautenbach said his 1961 Pontiac was originally owned by Kgosi Lucas Manyane Mangope, the late leader of Bophuthatswana.

“I saw it on a car show and I knew I wanted it and got in contact with the owner.”

He said he negotiated for a while until they came to a fair price and he purchased it.

Vintage car owners said a few cars were precious to own although some were petrol gobblers.
