Senzo’s insurance payout goes to kids
“We must know who killed Senzo.”
Half of the R4 million Premier Soccer League (PSL) insurance payout for the death of Senzo Meyiwa will go to the late Bafana and Orlando Pirates goalkeeper’s children, it was confirmed yesterday.
PSL and Pirates chairperson Irvin Khoza said they had agreed with Meyiwa’s family that R2 million would be administered from a guardian’s fund, The Citizen reported.
The other R2 million is being paid to Pirates, though Khoza added that the club would not be looking to recover their expenses from Meyiwa’s funeral.
Raymond Hack, the executor of Meyiwa’s estate, said they currently had knowledge of three children fathered by the former Bafana Bafana captain. “We are aware of three potential children, a child prior to him living with Mandisa (Mkhize), one with Mandisa and there are allegations he had a child with Kelly Khumalo.
“Anybody who believes they have a claim [that Meyiwa is the father of their child] is free to go to the master [of the court] and lodge a claim. The master will then determine whether there should be a paternity suit.”
Meyiwa wed Mkhize in a traditional marriage in 2013, but they never registered the marriage in a South African court, so Mkhize does not have a claim to any of the R2 million.
The money instead goes into a trust fund for Meyiwa’s children that they will be able to access when they turn 18. Meyiwa was in a relationship with pop star Khumalo, and was shot dead at her home in Vosloorus on October 26, 2014.
The police have still not found the culprit, but Sam Meyiwa, Senzo’s father, said yesterday that he finally felt some progress on the matter was being made. “We are relieved the Hawks are investigating the matter, it seems like some progress is being made. We were disappointed … We could go up to three to four months without any updates. But now it seems there might be some finality on the matter,” he said.
Sam Meyiwa has also previously said he does not want Khumalo to have any part of the insurance payout, but it now appears her daughter will get as much as any of Senzo’s other children.
Khoza, meanwhile, urged the South African authorities to find Senzo’s killer. “What is important for me is that the murder of Senzo must be solved,” said Khoza.
“It is very important that a man of such high profile, a national team captain, a goalkeeper of Orlando Pirates … if his murder cannot be solved, how much for the man in obscurity? “We cannot allow this incident to blemish the record of what South Africa has contributed to the world. We must know who killed Senzo.”
