Watch: N12 in Joburg south closed due to fiery fuel tanker

The JMPD has advised motorists in the area to use alternative routes as all lanes are currently inaccessible.

The N12 East freeway has been temporarily closed due to a fuel tanker ablaze near the Xavier Street exit in Ridgeway, Johannesburg.

JMPD spokesperson Superintendent Xolani Fihla confirmed the presence of firefighters on the scene as they work tirelessly to extinguish the blazing vehicle. As a result, all lanes are currently inaccessible.

“JMPD freeway officers are on-site, directing traffic towards the M1 North via Uncle Charlie’s Interchange in an effort to maintain traffic flow and safety.”

Motorists are advised to anticipate delays and to seek alternative routes.

The M1 North and Xavier Street in Robertsham have been suggested as viable options. While these routes may experience increased traffic due to the diversion, they provide a safer alternative for drivers.

“The cause of the fuel tanker fire is under investigation, and further updates will be provided as they become available. In the meantime, co-operation and patience from all road users are crucial to ensuring a safe and efficient resolution to the incident.

“Please adhere to the instructions of emergency personnel and law enforcement officers in the area,” urges Fihla.
