Youth turn out in numbers to vote in Pretoria's Ward 56
Long queues formed across voting stations in Pretoria as young people and first-time voters turned up to make their mark.
On Wednesday, residents across Pretoria are heading to voting stations to make their mark.
Rekord visited three voting stations in Ward 56 in the east of Pretoria: Brooklyn Primary School, Belgrave Square Park and the Nederduitse Gereformeerde Kerk Universiteits-oord, where voters from different age groups turned out to exercise their democratic right.
Belgrave Square Park was particularly busy, with large numbers of young people queuing to vote.
Generations at the polls
At Brooklyn Primary School and the church, the queues consisted of a mixture of elderly residents and students, although young voters remained prominent.
Ward 56 councillor Tiaan Dippenaar said he was pleased to see students turning out in numbers to participate in the elections.
He noted that some students had arrived before the voting stations officially opened and were already waiting in queues.
Dippenaar added that while queues at the Nederduitse Gereformeerde Kerk Universiteits-oord were moving slowly, voting at the other two stations was progressing well.
Marinda Marais, who voted at Brooklyn Primary School alongside her 92-year-old mother, said she was happy to participate in the elections and vote for change.
Voters Aimée Kotzee and Zoe Stand said they were pleased to exercise their civic duty, expressing hope that their votes would contribute to better service delivery.
Another voter, Akeeda Ally Buccus, said she hoped the elections would bring improvements in service delivery, particularly regarding the ongoing water and electricity outages affecting communities.
