Zoleke Mandela passes away

The South African writer and activist passed away surrounded by friends and family last night.

Zoleke Mandela (43), Nelson Mandela’s granddaughter, passed away last night following a long battle with cancer.

According to a statement issued by family spokesperson Zwelabo Mandela, Zoleke was admitted to hospital on September 18 for ongoing treatment for metastatic cancer of the hip, liver, lung, pelvis, brain and spinal cord.

“Recent scans revealed significant disease progression, including fibrosis in the lungs, as well as several emboli,” said Zwelabo.

“Our sincere gratitude to the medical team who took care of her,” he added.
