Illegal electrical connection kills child

Despite the death of a 2-year-old boy, residents in the Mamelodi East informal settlement vow to continue to make illegal electrical connections until the mayor takes action to help.

Many informal settlement residents have vowed to continue to make illegal electrical connections in Mamelodi East until Tshwane Mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa listens to their problems, despite the fact that yet another life was lost due to the dangerous practice.

Last week, a 2-year-old boy was shocked to death when he stepped on a live electrical wire in the Mamelodi East, Phase 3 informal settlement.

Residents have been connecting electricity from the poles in neighbouring areas to the ground illegally, leaving live wires exposed.

The deceased was playing outside while his mother was busy with the washing when he stepped on the live wire.

The incident occurred in the middle of the day. The mother of the little boy heard screams and rushed to find her son’s lifeless body on the ground next to the wires. She quickly rushed her son to the Mamelodi Day hospital by taxi, but her son was declared dead upon arrival. Mamelodi East police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Michael Mbewe, confirmed the death of the toddler and said that police had opened an inquest case. Investigations are underway and no arrests have been made yet.
