Manhole covers stolen

The manhole covers of Monument park are under threat.

Manhole covers are being stolen at an alarming rate in Monument Park, posing a danger to both pedestrians and motorists. Residents want the metro to replace the stolen covers before anyone falls into the uncovered manholes.

Ward Councillor Bronwyn Engelbrecht said the situation was getting out of control fast and that covers were being stolen from the area on a weekly basis. “This is happening across the metro. In Orion Street alone there are three covers removed from the manholes. This means the drains are uncovered, exposing the metro’s infrastructure and the open, unmarked holes pose a danger.”

Engelbrecht added that the metro could currently not replace the covers, as they were allegedly out of stock.

“These uncovered holes have been reported, yet it seems the matter is being ignored. It is obvious that the metro does not have the stock to replace the covers, which poses the question, what are they doing with their infrastructure budget? We are at the beginning of the financial year and they are already out of stock and budget,” she said.

The metro was unable to comment at the time of going to print.
