Pupils arrested after school violence

Various pupils have been arrested for school violence. Police are now on high alert and are patrolling the streets around certain schools in an attempt to curb the violence.

School violence in Pretoria has reached a new high after details of several violent fights surfaced recently. Local police have been on standby since the attacks as a preventative measure. Five pupils were recently arrested following the violent, suspected gang-related attack at Langenhoven High School. A pupil’s ear was cut off before he was stabbed outside the school.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Ann Poortman said that more arrests might follow, pending the police investigation. “Since the attack at the school, the school’s governing body, representatives of government and the police have met on two occasions to discuss the way forward to rid the school of violent attacks from pupils.”

On Monday morning, the police raided ten classes that were identified as risk factors. According to Poortman, they searched the classrooms for illegal substances and weapons. A small amount of dagga was discovered in the possession of a 15-year-old girl while police found two screwdrivers in one of the classrooms.

In another incident, a pupil from Hoërskool Hendrik Verwoerd was admitted to the Eugene Marais Hospital on Friday following an alleged violent fight during school hours. A reliable source told Rekord that a fight broke out between two groups of boys. According to the source, one boy was attacked and thrown to the ground, after which he was repeatedly kicked in the head.

Gershwin Chuenyane, spokesperson for the Department of Education, on Monday said two Hoërskool Langenhoven pupils were suspended pending a disciplinary hearing. “Investigations are underway, so we cannot comment further except to say that the police will patrol the street at the end of each school day.” Chuenyane could not yet comment regarding the Hoërskool Hendrik Verwoerd incident.
