Mamelodi High School celebrates Avogadro’s Day
Maths and science are often perceived to be the hardest subjects one could take at school, and many pupils shy away from them. In an attempt to increase the number of grade 9s taking these subjects in their FET, a Mamelodi school celebrated Avogadro's day.
Preparing their grade 9 pupils to make informed decisions when choosing their Further Educational Training (FET) subjects for grades 10-12, Mamelodi High School celebrated Avogadro’s Day and raised funds for the school laboratory.
The main aim of the day was to remove the stigma in the township pupils’ minds that science is a difficult subject. The event was organised by the grade 11 pupils and the school’s science teacher, Peter Maimana. Avogadro is a constant 6,02 x 1023 which is used in science calculations.
The celebration was held on the school premises on 23 October and started from 06:02 until 18:02 in the evening.
According to Maimana, Mamelodi High was the first school in Mamelodi to celebrate Avogadro’s day and they were planning to celebrate the day annually at the school.
“Most pupils have a belief that maths and physical science subjects are the most difficult subjects, but what they don’t know is that these subjects could open doors for them in the future,” said Maimana.
“The purpose of the day was for the grade 11 pupils to inform the grade 9s about the beauty of maths and physical science. The pupils also prepared science experiments for the grade 9 pupils,” said Maimana.
The money raised during Avogadro’s day will assist the school in recruiting science pupils, because the school lab needs equipment. .
