School gardening project now open for voting

Cangro's best young gardener of the year will soon be revealed. Make sure you vote for your favourite.

The public now has the opportunity to vote for their favourite young gardener who dedicated him/herself for two months to grow a cherry tomato plant. Rekord joined a green initiative with Cangro and Centurion Mall in August.

The aim of the project was to stimulate the minds of young pupils and make them aware of their green environment.

The project involved grade 3 pupils from six schools in and around Centurion.

Participating schools were Laerskool Bakenkop and their partner school Laerskool Booysens, Laerskool Hennopspark and their partner school Olievenhoutbosch Christian School and also Laerskool Wierdapark along with Orefile Primary School.

Each child was given a cherry tomato plant along with the unique Cangro can, which is made from recycled paint cans, and soil in which they had to grow the plants over a period of two months.

“We chose these plants because they are the easiest to grow,” said Pierre Botha, marketing manager of Centurion Mall.

In October, five participants with the best plant from each school were chosen for the final judging round.

To inspire the grade 3s, an industrial theatre play written by Deon Opperman was performed at each school. The play told the story of a little girl named Lily, who found a tomato seedling in a pavement crack and decided to rescue it. Lily was inspired while she was daydreaming one day to hang the can upside-down, and witnessed the fascinating journey of growth of the little plant.

Now the public has the opportunity to vote for the best grown cherry tomato plant from those displayed in Centurion Mall near the information kiosk.

The public can vote by visiting the kiosk or by visiting Centurion Mall’s Facebook page and liking their favourite plant.

They can also visit Cangro’s Facebook page to vote.

Voters stand a chance of winning one of 20 Cangro urban farming kits.
