No walk-in applications
Pretoria's universities will not be accepting any walk-in applications for first-year applicants in 2014 and urge prospective students to make use of their websites to check availability.

Universities in Pretoria will not be accepting any walk-in applicants during the new enrollment of students for 2014.
With 80 000 applications for first years, the Tshwane University of Technology can only accommodate just over 14 000 first-time students at all its sites this year. “The university will not accept any walk-in students for the purpose of submitting late applications. Prospective students interested in studying at TUT this year will have an opportunity to
apply online from 9 to 12 January 2014,” said the registrar, Professor Steward Mothata.
The University of Pretoria has already been filled to its capacity for 2014. “We received 42 000 applications and can only accommodate 10 500 first-year students. All available space was occupied last year, the closing date for applications was 30 September,” explained Nicolize Mulder, the university’s spokesperson.
Walk-in applications were put to an end when a prospective student’s mother was killed and 17 people were injured during a stampede at the University of Johannesburg in 2012.
“The late application enquiry system is very easy to use and will automatically check the admission requirements to see if they qualify to apply for a specific programme and if there is space available,” said Mothata.
However, the University of Pretoria stated that they would not accept further applications for 2014 first-year students. “Nobody can apply online for 2014. Our students received acceptance last year with their grade 11 marks and their
matric results were then checked to see if they still qualified. Registration begins next week,” said Mulder.
