Coca-Cola takes advice from teenager

A high school student at St Mary’s Diocesan School for Girls was surprised and excited when Coca-Cola accepted her suggestion for their Share a Coke campaign.

Kano Mokwena, a grade 10 pupil at St Mary’s Diocesan School for Girls, was surprised by the Coca Cola Company’s Share a Coke campaign last week Tuesday. Coca-Cola arranged the day after they received a letter from Kano asking for a can that anyone could buy, rather than searching for one out of the 500 general names originally printed by the company.

“We were inspired by Kano’s request, since she did not ask for a can with her own name, but rather a can that could be shared by everyone,” said Ramo Ledwaba, the brand manager.

The campaign arranged for special 200ml cans bearing the names of each girl in Kano’s class and a 200ml can bearing with the word ‘me’ on was given to each pupil in the school. Ledwaba said she was inspired by the inclusiveness of Kano’s request, and the teenager was excited by the company’s kind gesture. “When I saw the cans I knew it was about my letter and I freaked out! It is the only fizzy drink we drink at home and I love it,” an excited Kano said.

She added that she felt honoured that a big company like Coca-Cola accepted her idea. She received two cans and two 500ml bottles, one each with her name on and the other with ‘me’ on them and a branded T-shirt also with her name on it.
