Pupils from different schools in Mamelodi had the opportunity to learn about the value of water and also a clean Moretele River earlier this week.

This comes after the Department of Water Affairs, in partnership with the Department of Basic Education, Rand Water, the Tshwane metro and the JNF Walter Sisulu Environmental Centre, held a Water Awareness Week event in the area.

The event was held at JNF Walter Sisulu Environmental Centre in Mamelodi East.

Lucky Makgarengi of the national water department said Water Awareness Week was an awareness campaign initiated by the department to reinforce the need to preserve water as well as the need for sustainable management of this scarce resource and the role water plays in eradicating poverty and underdevelopment in South Africa.

The campaign started on 17 March and runs until Sunday. “This year’s theme is Celebrating 20 Years of Water Delivery for Social and Economic Development,” said Makgarengi. Pupils were taught about the value of water, water supply, waste management and hygiene. Then they put their thoery into action when they cleaned the river up to the Moretele Park Resort.
