Citizens raise their views about elections
Thousands of citizens went to cast their votes on Wednesday morning.
The much anticipated day finally arrived and citizens in all parts of the country went out in numbers to cast their votes. Many had expectations about the outcome of the election and everyone is now eager to find out who will be the next president.
According to voters who queued at various voting stations in Centurion, there were no disruptions and everything went smoothly. Rekord spoke to some of the voters who queued from as early as 05:30 in the morning and many emphasised the importance of voting.
Shawn Bongers said he was voting to secure his six-month-old son’s future. “Voting is important for every citizen because if one does not vote then no complaints should be raised,” said Bongers. Born free Melinda-Michelle Versluis was excited about this day. “As a young person I feel that I’m also in charge of making a difference in my country. There are so many issues that need to be addressed such as roads and if we do not vote, then things will never change. ”
First time voter, Neene Blignaut, said even though the young generation did not experience the hardships the freedom fighters went through, it is still important for parents to inform their children about the history of this country, she explained. Willem and his wife Reggie Stiglingh said they believe the next government will make a difference in this country and that they have confidence in the party they have voted for.
Karin Page said she believed there should be a strong opposition party that will address the concerns of the people. “It is my right and duty as a citizen of this country to vote and I am positive the next government will make a difference in our lives,” elaborated Johan Kruger who couldn’t wait to cast his vote. Tjaart Mare and John Mokhari said they felt happy about this day and that they are hopeful to see change. Speaking more about corruption that is happening in the country, Amanda Lee who had never participated in elections before, said it was time to vote for an honest future where people can be happy, secured and not be involved in corruption.
