Would-be thieves nabbed

Two men were arrested in Lyttelton for an attempted break-in on Monday thanks to the various community organisations and the quick thinking of a domestic worker.

Two men were recently arrested for attempted house break-in, the Lyttelton SAPS Sector 2 Community Policing Subforum said on Monday.

According to the chairperson of the Subforum, Lourens Botha, the incident took place at around 10:30 when a call came in over the Lytcom Radio network for a robbery in progress at house number 216, Van Riebeeck Avenue, Lyttelton.

Upon their arrival, it was established that it was not in fact a robbery in progress, but a trespassing and attempted break-in at 42 Molteno Avenue. Botha said that after the alarm at 42 Molteno went off, the perpetrators jumped over the wall into 220 Van Riebeeck, where the domestic worker spotted them and called for help on the radio. The owner of 216 Van Riebeeck immediately called for assistance.

“At around 10:41, the two suspects, who had since jumped into Van Riebeeck Avenue and started running in the direction of Fitzpatrick Avenue, were apprehended. At this point Monitor Net had also arrived on scene, followed shortly thereafter by the Lyttelton police. The two suspects were taken into custody. Several more SAPS vehicles (in total four marked vans and an unmarked vehicle), a Chubb Armed response vehicle and a Monitor Net Tactical Response vehicle also responded to the scene, added to the almost ten Lytcom vehicles that responded,” explained Botha.

He further said the two suspects were identified by the domestic worker at 220 Van Riebeeck and taken to the Lyttelton police station. “After police searched the premises, the owner, accompanied by his son-in-law and several armed response officers, canvassed the interior of the house and it was confirmed that the suspects did not manage to break into the house, nothing was stolen,” said Botha.

Nico Chrisostomou from Monitor Net said that when they responded to the call, his team, along with the CPF, managed to arrest the two men. The police were not available to confirm the arrests or the age of the suspects.
