ANC takes the lead in Gauteng

The ANC is currently leading the Gauteng provincial votes according to the Independent Electoral Commission.

The ANC is leading with 58.62% of the Gauteng provincial votes after the first results of the fifth democratic elections became known on Thursday at the Results Operation Centre at the Tshwane Events Centre.

The figures, released at 15:10 by the IEC, state that the DA is second with 26.31%, while the the EFF (Economic Freedom Fighters) is in third place with 8.49%. The Pretoria-based FFP+ received 1.52% of the provincial votes.

“We are pleased by the great turnout of voters, in particular first-time voters. Government commends young voters for their commitment to our democracy and the enthusiastic manner in which they participated in their first elections,” said the Government Communication and Information System CEO, Phumla Williams.

According to the IEC, 1% of the total 469 437 votes were spoilt votes.

The national results reveal that the ANC is the lead with 6 154 308 votes, the DA second with 2 081 555, and the EFF third with 480 154.

According to political analyst Professor Tinyiko Maluleke, the EFF may become the official opposition party in a few provinces. “I think we need to watch Gauteng very carefully because an interesting picture is emerging there,” he reportedly said.
