Dumped ballot papers counted

The Democratic Alliance confirmed that the discovered ballot papers were counted votes, after a resident found dumped ballot papers in Lynnwood Ridge on Thursday.

The dumped ballot papers that were discovered in a park in Lynnwood Ridge on Thursday afternoon were counted votes, leader of the Democratic Alliance (DA), Helen Zille, said on Thursday.

This comes after concerns were raised when a resident confirmed with Rekord that several bags of ballot papers were found in a park in Lynnwood Ridge. Most of the ballot papers were marked as votes for the DA. “DA party agents at the count in the affected voting districts confirmed that the ballots had been counted. I accept their word for it. There is a chance that they may have fallen off a truck. They should be kept and stored. Investigations continue,” said Zille.

Several other ballots papers were also found in Alexandra and Diepsloot on Thursday. After several attempts, the IEC could not be reached for comment.

Opposing parties, the ANC and DA, are battling for Gauteng as the DA’s provincial votes are standing at 1 180 965 at 10:20, with the ANC leading at 1 870 631 votes. The Economic Freedom Fighters is third, with a count of 355 774 votes. Vote counts are still in progress at the Results Operations Centre at the Tshwane Events Centre, as 82.89% of Gauteng’s votes have been counted.

“The story of Gauteng is about growth, it’s a story about whether we put the ANC just below 50% or just about 50%. When I reflect on the scoreboard now, I can see that it’s getting closer and closer. Our big areas are still coming in,” the DA’s Gauteng premier candidate, Mmusi Maimane, reportedly said.
