Two still at large after stealing cellphones worth thousands

Gun shots were exchanged between the police and the suspects

Police were on Monday still searching for two armed men who allegedly robbed a retail store in Soshanguve.

According to police spokesperson Warrant Officer Lolo Mangena, a group of four armed men entered the shop at around 10:00 on Friday and held the security guard and staff members at gunpoint before forcing them into the storeroom.

Mangena said the men stole cell phones, worth an estimated R300 000 and packed them in eight bags before fleeing the scene in a 2013 silver Mercedes Benz.

“A passer-by later spotted a suspicious vehicle, with occupants inside and alerted the police. The police then followed up on the lead and found the vehicle in Block AA. A shoot-out broke out between the occupants and the police,” explained Mangena.

Mangena further said two men sitting in the back of the Mercedes managed to escape while two other men, aged 31 and 42, were arrested. The police found the eight bags with the stolen cell phones in the vehicle.

Three firearms with wiped serial numbers were seized. No one was injured and the two men arrested men will appear in court soon. Anyone who might have the information that can lead to the arrest of the other two suspects can phone Mangena on 079-694-6515.
