Charity begins at home

School appeals to community to lend a helping hand.

The Eersterust Secondary School has been flung into financial hardship since 1990 and the school is appealing to all good Samaritans to help them.

William Louw, principal of the school, said that the school excelled in sport, culture and academic achievements over the past few years, despite the challenges. The matric group of 2013 managed to obtain a 92, 8% pass rate and they are working towards 100% in 2014.

“Our financial situation worsened after 1990 when those parents who could afford it sent their children to ex-model C schools. The school is dependent on school fees to foot the monthly bills and we need our community’s help,” Louw said.

He said the school community comprises unemployed parents, single parents and in some instances the children runs and maintain their households.

“Nowadays schools are largely responsible for their financial commitments such as electricity and telephone accounts, photocopying, to name but a few. It has become increasingly difficult to manage the school without the necessary funds,” he said.

The school has now started to appeal to former pupils to assist the school in any way they can. The school fee currently stands at R1 800 per year and Louw is appealing to the larger community to ‘adopt’ a school fee for a child.

“Your modest contributions could help us to re-live the glory days at Eersterust Secondary,” he said.

Louw thanked Novene Makalane and Haylay Christian for sponsoring a pupil’s school fees for the year.
