Police searching for five escaped criminals

Police are searching for five armed criminals after they escaped while being transported to prison after their court appearance, police said.

Police are requesting assistance from residents of Pretoria to find five dangerous criminals after they escaped while being transported to the Modderbee Prison in the East Rand after their court appearance at the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court, police told Rekord.

“These suspects are still at large. Even though they escaped from the East Rand, these criminals are moving around, so they could be anywhere. Residents of Pretoria can help us find these criminals,” said provincial spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini.

Muzi Sambula, Alex Maake, Sipho Edwin Mzimba, Mkhulu Ndlovu and Sipho Mpostoli Mthethwa escaped through the roof of a truck after they appeared in court on Monday.

“Police who were transporting them were alerted by a member of the public who indicated that there was a problem at the back of the truck. Upon inspection, one of the prisoners was found on top of the truck,” said Dlamini.

He added that the criminals were considered dangerous and had appeared in court for violent crimes including murder, armed robbery, possession of unlicensed firearms, business robbery and hijacking.

“We urge members of the public who have any information to contact the police. These escapees should not be confronted, as they are considered armed and dangerous,” Dlamini said.
