Tshwane metro officers caught bribing

The Tshwane Metro Police is fighting to curb corruption after two officers were caught soliciting bribes from the public, the Tshwane Metro Police said.

Two Tshwane metro police officers will be facing disciplinary action and a suspension after they were caught soliciting bribes from motorists, the metro police said.

According to spokesperson Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba, the officers were caught on Tuesday by an investigator of the civilian and internal affairs unit close to the intersection of Luttig and Maltzan streets.

“When the investigator noticed the suspicious behaviour of the officers, he parked at a safe distance to observe them for about 30 minutes. During that period, approximately ten cars were stopped. One officer issued one Aarto notice and the other issued two,” said Mahamba.

The investigator then noticed a Mercedez Benz being pulled over and the driver handing over money to one of the officers. “The investigator managed to stop the driver of the Mercedes Benz before he drove off. The driver confessed to paying a bribe and both officers confessed to taking the bribe,” Mahamba said.

The investigator found R200 on the one officer and R190 on the other officer. The officers are expected to face disciplinary proceedings, however, a criminal case has not yet been opened. “The matter will be handled internally and they will be served with notices of intent to suspend,” said Mahamba.

Meanwhile, another metro police trainee official had his contract terminated due to being arrested for fraud-related charges. “The officer was detained and is due to appear in court soon. The metro police department is committed to fighting corruption within the department,” Mahamba said.
