Fraudster back in cells

Police arrested a fraud convict on parole for the same crime in the city centre.

A 33-year-old man released on parole for fraud was again arrested on Tuesday in the city centre on another fraud charge, the Pretoria Central police said. Police apprehended the man on the corner of Volkstem and Pretorius streets after receiving a tip-off.

Central police spokesperson, Sergeant Ann Poortman, said it is alleged that the man had been committing fraud while on parole. The man had been released on parole after serving about half of his jail term, and was reporting to the Sunnyside police station daily.

This was after the man was earlier arrested for committing this type of crime in Sunnyside and sentenced early last year to two years imprisonment.

Police explained that the man was impersonating an SABC officer recruiting personnel. The fraud convict promised his victims a job at the SABC if paid a bribe of between R1 000 and R2 000.

Police believed there were more victims but they did not report the matter to the police. “We urge everyone who has been a victim of this crime to report it to the police,” Poortman said. People can do it at the Pretoria Central police station on the corner of Bosman and Pretorius streets in the city centre.
