12-year-old tells of theft ordeal

Colby De Freitas (12) tells Rekord about three suspects who robbed him and his grandmother.

A 61-year-old grandmother was attacked and her cell phone and bag stolen when she experienced theft by three men while travelling with her 12-year-old son on Eskia Mphahlele Drive.

Colby De Freitas (12) was travelling through Pretoria central with his grandmother when they stopped at a robot on Eskia Mphahlele Drive. An unknown suspect approached them and opened the back door.

“A man who  was selling chips at the robot came to the car. The back door wasn’t locked and my grandmother’s bag was on the backseat. The man opened the door, took the bag and ran away,” said De Freitas.

His grandmother immediately got out of the car and screamed for help, however, another man approached them, claiming to help them. “As my gran was screaming for help, a man came to ask what was stolen. As my gran tried to explain, the man took her cell phone and also ran away,” De Freitas said.

The ordeal continued when a third man approached De Freitas and his grandmother. “My gran continued yelling for help and another man suddenly came and started to hit my gran on the head. He ripped her necklace off her neck and took her earrings and he also ran away,” he said.

His grandmother sustained minor injuries including scratches on the neck. “I was sitting in the car when all of this was happening and I wasn’t hurt.  I do not know how I was feeling at the time, I was just very shocked,” said De Freitas.
