A power station recently was set ablase after cable thieves allegedly dropped a candle they were using for light.
The Cornwall Hill power station in Irene was on Friday engulfed in flames. According to Johan Pieterse, Tshwane Emergency spokesperson, it took fire fighters more than three hours to completely extinguish the flames.
“Because of the oils used in the power station the fire was very large and hard to put out,” Pieterse said.
The estimated cost of damages of the power station caused by the fire is R 9 million.
According to Andre Kitshoff, vice chairman of CPF sector three, the fire was apparently caused by a lit candle, used by cable thieves that fell and set the oil on fire.
The thieves fled the scene after the fire started.
Kitshoff said that there were no injuries caused by the fire.
Christa Spoelstra, ward councillor, assured residents that no power outages can be expected after the fire.
Spoelstra also said that the council is working hard to fix the damaged substation.
