City harassed by looters

The city centre is quiet after a protest by informal traders, however, several people are trying to loot in the CBD, Tshwane Metro Police said.

After a protest by hundreds of informal traders interrupted the city centre on Tuesday, the Tshwane Metro Police have confirmed on Wednesday afternoon that the protest is over and that the city is clean and clear.

“There are no other protests today. The city is clear and quiet and we are monitoring the situation,” Tshwane Metro Police spokesperson Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba said on Wednesday.

He added that a group of 10 to 15 people, however, are trying to cause chaos by attempting to loot the shops in the CBD. “We are suspecting that these groups of people are using this protest as cover up for the criminal activity. We are monitoring this and so far they have been unsuccessful,” said Mahamba.

On Tuesday evening, one protester was shot in Marabastad by a security guard. “He was shot in the leg by a security guard as he tried to loot. He was rushed to hospital and police are investigating the events that led to the shooting,” Mahamba said.
