Two suspects shot, two still at large

Two suspects fled in a Nissan bakkie

Police are still searching for other two suspects who were involved in an attempted hijacking after a shootout on the corner of Hendrik Verwoerd and Rooihuiskraal roads on Wednesday.

This occurred when four suspects in total were shot and injured while two managed to flee the scene after attempting to hijack a RAM courier vehicle that was transporting cell phones.

According to police spokesman captain Thomas Mufamadi, the incident occurred at 11:40 when the courier vehicle was on its way to deliver cell phones at one of the cell phone shops in the area.

Mufamadi said the courier vehicle was preparing to offload the boxes of cell phones at a parking lot when two armed men pointed a gun at them. “The suspects then pulled out the courier guys from their vehicle and fled with the car.”

He further said the security of RAM that was escorting the vehicle then stopped the hijacked car and when they stopped at the corner of Hendrik Verwoerd and Rooihuiskraal roads, shots were fired. “We have recovered one firearm at the scene and we are continuing with the investigations to ensure that the fled suspects are caught.”

According to paramedics who were called to the scene, the injured suspects sustained serious injuries. “Upon our arrival at the scene, one man was found to be in a critical condition and the other man sustained serious injuries. Both men were transported to hospital after receiving treatment on the scene,” said Netcare 911 spokesperson Santi Steinmann.

Sector 3 Wierdabrug community police forum chairperson, Hannes du Buisson said: “We are concerned about what appears to be an increase in these kind of robberies. We want to congratulate the armed reaction team who engaged the robbers and thwarted the robbery. Criminals must know the community in sector 3 is tired of crime and criminal activities in our area and we will assist the police and other crime fighting organisations at all times to ensure a safer community.”

The two shot suspects were taken to hospital and are under police guard. The intersection has been re-opened.
