Two nabbed for attempted vehicle theft

Two alleged criminals were arrested on Thursday for attempting to steal a vehicle at a shopping centre in Elardus Park.

The Lyttleton police on Thursday evening successfully arrested two suspects for attempted motor vehicle theft in Elardus Park.

The two alleged criminals were trying to break into a vehicle at Cornwall View Centre in Piering Road when security units caught them in the act.

The men made a failed attempt to flee the parking lot when officers from Ubuntu and Bull Security, in a combined effort with the Lyttelton sector 4 community policing forum, nabbed them.

It is believed that R1 200 cash and vehicle break-in tools was found on one of the suspects.

Warrant officer Hero Gumbu, spokesperson of the Lyttleton police, could not confirm if the men are linked to similar crimes in the area.

Vehicle theft and theft out of vehicles have increased across the east of Pretoria and owners of vehicles and drivers need to be aware of the added risks when they park their cars in unprotected areas.

Managing director of ADT Northern Region, Mike Kidson, urged drivers to park in protected areas and offers the following tips to ensure the safety of their vehicles:

– Try not to park your vehicle on the street. If possible, park in a garage or behind a locked gate.

– If you are parking in a public place, park in a well-lit area with regular security patrols and cameras.

– Avoid parking in dark, secluded spots, or in corners that may provide natural hiding places.

– Physically check that your doors are locked. Criminals often use remote-jamming devices to block cars from locking. This is prevalent at shopping centres (big and small) and also at schools.

– Put valuables and other items in your boot. Do not leave valuables in plain sight inside your car.
