A Tshwane metro police officer was arrested by the Hawks on Saturday afternoon in Pretoria after receiving a R10 000 bribe from an innocent motorist.
According to Captain Paul Ramaloko, Hawks spokesperson, they were alerted on Saturday about a metro police officer picking up R6 000 as a second payment of the R10 000. “We followed the required procedure for entrapment and arrested the officer in Pretoria central just after the R6 000 was collected,” Ramaloko said.
Ramaloko said the officer pulled over an innocent man on Friday who was picking someone up in the street. With an accomplice, they took the man’s vehicle to the metro pound in Vermeulen Street where they told him to pay R10 000 to have his car released.
The officer then took the man to an ATM where he had to withdraw R4 000 to make the first payment. The outstanding R6 000 was to be collected the next day.
The Hawks was informed about the bribery and arrested the man after the second payment was made.
According to Ramaloko, the officer will appear in Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
