Discussions to strengthen security at Lyttelton Primary School to prevent the school from being robbed again will be discussed at a meeting scheduled to be held this week, the department of education said on Thursday.
This follows a recent incident where two armed suspects robbed the school at gunpoint of R40 000.
According to the Gauteng department of education’s spokesperson, Phumla Sekhonyane, the department is aware of the robbery at the school. The department also indicated they will cooperate fully with the police in investigating the matter.
She also said the school governing body (SGB) would meet on 26 June to discuss the strengthening of security at the school to prevent further attacks.
Lyttelton police spokesperson, warrant officer Hero Gumbu, said the suspects entered the school during school hours on 13 June, pretending to be parents. “They went to reception and said they wanted to enquire about the balance of their children’s school fees. They were then taken to the finance office. They allegedly held the finance officer at gunpoint and took the money,” said Gumbu.
“We have opened a case of armed robbery. Anyone with information regarding the incident should report it to the Lyttelton police on 012-644-8600,” Gumbu said.
Police are still searching for the suspects.
