City’s water of a high quality

The metro recently achieved the coveted Blue Drop certification in a national competition that was conducted by the department on water standards.

Gauteng and Pretoria residents need not worry about a water shortage in the near future as the department of water affairs has assured the province it can can supply the province and the city with enough and quality water.

The department of water affairs and sanitation said: “Water in the Tshwane Metro area is rated among the best in the world. Residents can drink it directly from the tap without exposing themselves to any water-borne diseases. The metro recently achieved the coveted Blue Drop certification in a national competition conducted by the department.”

The department also gave the assurance that the Gauteng Province was not facing a water shortage in the near future. Regarding municipalities that are already affected by the water shortage, minister Nomvula Mokonyane has deployed teams to deal with the water challenges and the department is introducing long-term interventions in those municipalities.

The South Africa Local Government Association (Salga) last week announced that South Africa may experience water shortages in the near future. This was stated in the Salga annual report with regard to service delivery in municipalities. Salga councillor Pinky Moloi said ”There are contingency plans in place to build new dams to face this challenge. Furthermore, it is important to educate people on water conservation.”

With the growth of the population over the years, South Africa is facing a possible water shortage in the future. As debates on the possible water shortage scenarios continue, what is certain is that South Africa has a lot of work ahead if it is to ensure its water resources are properly managed for growth.
