As the month of June was for the Youth, the City of Tshwane closed it on a high note by investing in the youth by launching the Fabrication Laboratory (FabLab and kasi Labs).
These FabLabs are equipped with computers where they can design, create prototypes of their designs and have them cut and printed at the lab. The labs have some high tech machinery like 3-D printers, vinyl cutter, vinyl printer and router.
The metro has invested a total of R1 000 000 in the project, with each lab costing R56 000. A total of 14 mobile labs where handed over to seven technical and secondary schools, which were identified by the regions within the City of Tshwane‘s jurisdiction. The schools that received the FabLabs were: Wallmansthall High School, Tipfuxeni Secondary School, Rakgotso Secondary School, Bokgoni Technical School, Steve Tshwete Senior Secondary School, Chipa Tabane High School, Ribane-Laka High School, Zithobeni Secondary School and Sithenjiwe Secondary School.
The executive mayor, Kgosientso Ramokgopa, said: “Tshwane Vision 2055 is clear in its intentions to promote youth development initiatives and accessibility of youth to various skills and economic development programmes. The benefits of these investments in our youth will facilitate better access to information, training opportunities, technical education and potential for job opportunities. These opportunities will enable the City of Tshwane youth to realise their full potential for them to actively participate in the economic drive for the city.”
The launching of the FabLab is a stepping stone to the overall vision of having a youth Plug n Play Center of which the FabLab will constitute a third of the center. These labs will expose the youth from all walks of life to the field of innovation and technology. Further broaden the educational horizon and grow interest in the field of science and mathematics.
The labs are also not limited to pupils only, the youth can access the FabLab throughout the day. It is situated at the Innovation Hub in Lynnwood and is accessible on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
