Cigarettes worth thousands stolen

The driver of the bakkie was taken to Rievlei and left there.

Six armed robbers were still at large on Thursday after they allegedly robbed a vehicle which transported cigarettes on Wednesday on Union Avenue.

According to police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Hero Gumbu, the incident took place at around 12:10 when the driver of a Caddy bakkie was approached by four armed men who ordered him to stop and park it on the side of the road.

Gumbu said the cigarettes which was stolen was worth an estimated R300 000.

“The suspects driving a silver Chevrolet attempted to overtake the bakkie and ordered the driver to stop. They stepped out of their vehicle, pointed a firearm at the driver, took him out of his vehicle and threw him into their vehicle. The suspects then drove off with the victim and left him in an open veld in Rietvlei. He had no signs of assault,” explained Gumbu.

Gumbu further said it seemed as if the suspects were using two separate vehicles as later on a long-base white Toyota bakkie with two suspects came and offloaded the cigarettes into their bakkie. “One of the two suspects was wearing a balaclava and they loaded all the stock that was in the Caddie bakkie into their vehicle,” Gumbu said.

A case of hijacking has been opened at the Lyttelton police station and an investigation is underway.
