Cable thieves strike Centurion again

Residents of Monavoni are now with electricity when power was restored after a cable theft incident in the area.

Power has been restored in Monavoni after the area experienced a power outage on Saturday due to cable theft, DA Tshwane Spokesperson Ina Strydom told Rekord.

“It has recovered. Residents posted on Facebook that the power is back on. ,” she said. Residents of Monavoni were left in the dark on Saturday after an alleged attempted cable theft. “The guards allegedly managed to disturb the thief but the cables were cut,” Cllr Strydom said.

According to the Tshwane metro, the attempted hijacking took place at Sandstone Estate, Monavoni. “No shots were fired. The transformer blew up due to the attempted cable theft,” the Tshwane metro said. The suspect allegedly fled the scene.

“The suspect fled the scene after our security put the brakes to his nefarious activity. Our heightened security is beginning to bear fruit,” said the Tshwane metro. This comes after the Tshwane metro executive mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa announced on Wednesday that the municipality has put in place strategies to curb the crisis.

Meanwhile, it was reported that another cable theft incident occurred in the Lyttelton area. “I saw a post about a cable theft on the corners of Sullivan and Rabie Street. I am trying to get further information about that,” said Cllr Strydom.

Police, however, cannot confirm the incident. “According to the station information, nothing was reported,” said police spokesperson Warrant Officer Marinda Austin.

Residents of Centurion were left in the dark for nearly four days when power went out on Monday after the Brakfontein substation was severely vandalised and the Kentron sub-station in Highveld caught fire.

“It is only Centurion that is being targeted and we really don’t know the reason,” Cllr Strydom said. After numerous attempts, police were unavailable for comment.
