CPF member robbed at gunpoint

A member of the Community Policing Forum was hijacked and robbed at gunpoint after he was followed from a bank at Centurion Lifestyle Centre.

A member of the Lyttelton Sector 1 Community Policing Forum (CPF) was hijacked in broad daylight in Wierda Park after he was followed from a bank at Centurion Lifestyle Centre by three suspects, the Community Policing Forum told Rekord.

According to Wierdabrug Sector 3 CPF chairperson Hannes Du Buisson, the CPF member had drawn R15 000 from the Standard Bank at the Centurion Lifestyle Centre before the hijacking. “Three armed suspects followed him from the centre. When the CPF member arrived at Estcourt Avenue in Wierda Park, the suspects pointed a gun at him, took the money and took his Kia Sorento,” said Du Buisson.

After trying to locate the hijackers and the car, Du Buisson says a patroller lost the suspects when they fled in the direction of Johannesburg. “One of our patrollers saw the car rushing out onto the Old Johannesburg Road towards Johannesburg. The hijackers had removed the back registration plate of the vehicle, so it was not easy to trace the car as the information about the car was incomplete,” Du Buisson said.

In Midrand, two armed suspects were caught on camera footage while robbing a man of a large sum of money just outside the Midrand Complex. The video shows the money being taken from the driver and the suspects running back to their vehicle.

The police are warning members of the community to be extra cautious when leaving a bank, especially after withdrawing large amounts of money. “We caution members of the public not to drive alone when they are transporting large amounts of cash. They should arrange to be escorted. Always be on the lookout for vehicles which may be following you, and if you see anything suspicious, call the police immediately,” said police spokesperson, Constable Matome Tlamela.
