Water in Hammanskraal and Temba cleared of contamination

The Tshwane City metro has cleared the allegation of contamination in water supply around Hammanskraal and Temba areas were contaminated.

Tshwane metro has sought to allay fears that the water supply in the Hammanskraal and Temba was contaminated. It said tests had found the water to be safe after complaints that several residents in the area were suffering from suspected diarrhoea symptoms. The suspicions emerged late on Tuesday after several residents of region 2 – which incorporates Hammanskraal and Temba – were vomiting severely after drink water from taps. Residents were advised to boil all water before use.

On Wednesday afternoon, the metro released the test results that showing the water was not contaminated.Spokesman Selby Bokaba said the metro’s water and sanitation division conducted the tests at all reservoirs and water pipelines in Region 2. “Tests were also conducted at 10 of the 27 stands of the people who complained of diarrhoea and results indicate that the water quality meets the required standards, and ruled out any microbial contamination – a bacteria causing disease. The City’s health services division further sent water samples to an independent laboratory, Asparata, for verification and confirmation of the results, which upheld the test results conducted at the city’s laboratory,” he said.

Bokaba sought to assure residents that water supplied by the city was safe.”Community members are also advised to check their food and drink sources for possible contamination and should continue to take all the necessary health checks and consult their nearest clinic or health facilities for advice.”He said the metro recently received a Blue Drop score of 95 percent, which he said attested to the city’s is capability to supply safe, quality water and act responsibly when deviations in the quality of tap water quality were detected.
