Faulty streetlights on the R55 west towards Laudium remain a serious concern among residents of Celtisdal as nothing has been done about the matter since April.
According to residents, crimes such as smash-and-grab robberies have occurred due to streetlights not in working order.
A of the residents who lives in a complex right next to the highway (N14) said this was becoming a high risk. The problem began at the onramp of the N14, across Ruimte through to Wierda Road.
Annali Ferreira said she drove home mostly during the night, and this had now become a fearful experience.“I have reported the streetlights several times to Tshwane but no feedback has been sent to me. Due to this problem crime in our area is starting to pick up than it was before the lights were installed more than a year ago.” Ferreira said attempted hijackings and theft were posted on community social pages.
“Rekord did a report about a year ago with regard to the street lights and the effect it is having on the smash-and-grab incidents on the N14 off-ramp. If the street lights are working, it will be possible for motorists to see what is going on around them instead of relying on head lights only,” she said.
Police spokesperson Captain Agnes Huma said only one crime was reported this month — a smash-and-grab robbery. It was not clear whether this could be linked to faulty street lights, she said.
Ward councillor Marika Kruger Muller said the defective street lights were related to the upgrade of the R55, and she undertook to follow up the matter with the electricity department.
Rekord is awaiting comment from Tshwane metro.
