High electricity account from nowhere

A resident is shocked about the high electricity account he has to pay suddenly.

A resident is furious as the Tshwane metro threatened to cut off his electricity even though his account is paid in full.

According to D. Moodley, the metro wrongfully sent him a bill of about R10 000 after he paid off the R30 000 he owed on his account.

He said he started paying his account normally in January in accordance with the amounts given to him by the metro. “Every month I called the municipality to give them my meter readings and find out from them how much I needed to pay,” Moodley said

He said his account was clear and he had credit of R1 921. However, on 18 June he received an account statement saying he owes R9 208. “I was shocked when I received the statement because when I called on 2 June I was told that I have a credit of R1 921 and when I asked why I received the statement for R9 208, no one could give me an explanation,” Moodley said.

Moodley said he was confused about the whole situation because even his readings on his account were sometimes wrong. “I once told the metro that if they need to access my property to get the meter readings they should call me. They said they would call me when they come, but they did not.”

South African National Civics Organisation chairperson, Nagesh Chetty, said they requested an intervention from the presidency and minster Praveen Gordon to look into the matters of the Tshwane metro. “Moodley has many complaints about the metro. We just cannot wait until this ticking bomb explodes because people in our city do not like to strike for service delivery problems.”

Chetty also mentioned that he had tried calling the mayor’s office, the metro call centre and even the ward councillor about the service delivery, but did not succeed. “Without service delivery our problems will only get bigger as the metro is doing nothing. We want to know if the mayor is going to do something about our problems.”

An enquiry has been sent to the metro about the matter and Rekord is still awaiting their reply.
