Man jumps to his death at Menlyn Shopping Centre

An on-duty security guard allegedly committed suicide when he jumped from a top floor inside Menlyn Shopping Centre.

A security guard apparently committed suicide at Menlyn Shopping Centre when he jumped to his death inside the centre on Tuesday.

Brooklyn police spokesperson Captain Colette Weilbach said this happened around 14:00.

“The Brooklyn police are investigating after an on-duty security officer allegedly jumped to his death from one of the floors inside the Menlyn Shopping Centre. No foul play is suspected at this stage.”

Menlyn Shopping Centre’s marketing manager Andrea De Wit said: “Menlyn Park Shopping Centre and the police are still investigating the circumstances of the tragedy at present and therefore have no further details at this stage.”

Marnel Strydom, who works at the shopping centre, said she had come out of a meeting when suddenly she saw the man coming from behind her.

“The only thing I saw was the security guard coming from my left side passing behind me and he jumped off. You could hear the crack of his skull. It all happened so fast that I am not 100% sure of what happened. But he did not slip or fall – he truly jumped from where he was,” she said.
