Daspoort tunnel unhygienic

Residents want the Daspoort tunnel cleaned as it is dirty and a health hazard to the people walking through the tunnel every day.

Dirt is taking over the Daspoort tunnel, residents in Pretoria Gardens and Danville complained this week.

“The tunnel looks like a pig sty. It is unhygienic from the Danville side to the Pretoria Gardens end,” Mike Smith from Pretoria Gardens said.

He said the tunnel had not been cleaned for the past few years.

“Heaps of rubble have taken over the sidewalk, with mud and stones everywhere you look.”

Residents said it was dangerous to walk in the tunnel at night because of stones littering the sidewalk.

Sizakele Mazibuko said: “The tunnel has become a dump site. I do not understand where all the rubble comes from but it looks bad and it is terrible. My child has to walk there every day from school and she says that the tunnel also smells really bad.”

She said the smell would make people sick and pedestrians were in more danger than motorists.

Smith said when people walked in the tunnel they got stuck in mud that had formed on the sidewalk.

“We cannot take this anymore. This is very wrong, something must be done about the tunnel. We call on the Tshwane metro to play their part and maintain the tunnel,” Mazibuko said.

The tunnel also had cracks, allowing water to leak through.

At the time of going to press, Tshwane metro has failed to comment.
