Attempted cable theft leaves Centurion in the dark
Centurion power might only be restored within the next 24 to 36 hours due to attempted cable theft early on Monday morning.
An attempted theft of underground electricity cables in the early hours of Monday morning left various areas in Centurion in the dark.
Councillor Ina Strijdom said the theft caused 600 meters of cable to burn out and had a ripple effect on the N.I.V.S. primary substation in Nellmapius Road. The electricity panels and cables in the substation were also scorched.
She said the substation itself was not entered or vandalised by any criminal activity.
Affected areas include Kentron factory, Southdowns Township, certain areas of Highveld Township between Nellmapius and John Vorster Roads, the Animal and Dairy research council, Tshwane Vehicle Testing and Licencing offices and Heritage Hill.
Strijdom said the underground cables exploded somewhere between Nellmapius Road and Heritage Hill and caused extensive damage.
Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba, spokesperson for the Tshwane Metro Police, warned that the licensing centre will be closed until power has been restored: “Services that are rendered will only include learner’s tests and practical driver’s test. Renewals, issuing of cards and appointments will resume when the electricity has been restored.”
Lindela Mashigo, spokesperson for the Tshwane municipality, said power might be restored within the next 24 to 36 hours.
