Illegal dumpsite cleaned up
The illegal dumpsites are created because official landfills have been closed.
The formation of illegal dumpsites around Pretoria is the result of official landfills being closed, according to Ward 65 Councillor Christa Spoelstra.
An illegal dumpsite on West Street, South of Super Sport Park has filled up with garden refuse, building rubble and household waste.
Councillor Spoelstra said the Rooihuiskraal, Garskloof and Kwaggasrand landfill sites have been closed and this could be the reason people resort to creating illegal dumpsites.
“I have received several calls from residents complaining about the state of the area next to the N1 Highway and we decided together with Waste Management, Nature Conservation, Metro police and Parks to clean up the area. We are trying to come up with a permanent solution by building a barricade that will prevent people from entering the area. This is a big clean-up and we hope we will be able to keep the area clean.”
Kobus Nagel, a local resident, said there are vagrants in the area and this adds to the land being filthy. He said the dumpsite also posed a health and safety risks because criminals use the area as a hideout.
