Medunsa students released on free bail

Five Medunsa students were released on free bail after they appeared in court on Monday, police said.

Five Medunsa students were released on free bail when they appeared in the Pretoria North Magistrates Court on Monday, following an arrest on Saturday, police spokesperson Captain Rheineth Motlana told Rekord.

The students appeared on charges of malicious damage to property after a vehicle and the main entrance of the Ga-Rankuwa campus were set on fire during a violent protest earlier in August.

“The students will reappear on 23 September. Approximately 300 students, travelling in buses, gathered outside the court in support of the accused. Fortunately there was no violence and the situation was calm,” said Motlana.

Motlana said more students are expected to be apprehended. “The arrests are ongoing and we expect to arrest more students who were involved in the violence,” she said.

Medunsa students caused chaos and violence at the campus in August as students demanded the dismissal of lazy lecturers, said to be failing students deliberately. They also objected to proposed renaming of the medical institution to Sefako Makgatho. Another issue related to the National Student Financial Aid Scheme, claimed that the scheme failed to pay 100% of their tuition fees.
