A battle of PHSG chefs

Young culinary wizards from a well-known Pretoria high school are all set to prove they have what it takes to win a man’s heart through his stomach.

Future young culinary wizards of Pretoria High School for Girls (PHSG) are all set to prove they have what it takes to win a man’s heart through his stomach.

Taking their cue from the wildly popular “Master Chef” and “Chopped” reality shows, the school’s “Spar Battle of the PHSG chefs” has embarked on its own competition to raise money at their Spring Fair which takes place on Saturday 30th August 2014.

This is a first for the school’s annual money raising event – and a first in South Africa – in this particular format. According to the organiser Karen Harris, this fair will be packed with pressure-cooker suspense and heavenly food.

“There will be four rounds, each of which will see twenty PHSG pupils with friends, parents and siblings showing off their culinary skills. The challenge will be to conjure up a mouth-watering dish, with limited utensils and a bag of mystery ingredients, while the clock ticks.’’

The schedule is as follows: Round One: 8:30 – 9:30 PHSG pupils; Round Two: 9:45 -10:45 PHSG pupils and their parents; Round Three: 11:00 -12:00 PHSG pupils and their friends; and Round Four: 12:15 – 13:15 PHSG pupils and their siblings.

Each round will be judged by a renowned local chef from one of the four leading culinary schools in Pretoria: Steyns’ Culinary School, Prue Leith Chefs Academy, South African School of Cookery and Chefs Training and Innovation Academy.

In addition, the Spring Fair will host an auction, mega book sale, white elephant stall, Pan-African drumming circle, fashion show, fun fair, plant sale, tombola, pipe band, gum boot dancers, as well as a food court boasting scrumptious flavours from around the globe.

The event starts at 08:00 and finishes at 14:00.

“It is open for all and promises to be fun-packed and a cuisine experience without par,” Harris said.
