American tourists had been warned by the American Diplomatic Mission to South Africa not to visit the Pretoria Zoo until the spate of criminal activities in and around the zoo had been resolved.
In a statement it said there had been a lot of robberies against visitors to the zoo and advised American citizens to steer clear of the zoo for the time being.
“Criminal activities such as assault, armed robbery and theft, are particularly high in areas around hotels, tourist attractions, and public transportation centres, especially in major cities. Review your personal security plans; remain aware of your surroundings, and maintain a high level of vigilance and take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security,” the statement said.
The statement recommended American citizens living in or travelling to South Africa should enroll in the Department of State’s Smart Traveller Enrolment Programme (STEP) at travel.state.gov.
“STEP enrolment gives you the latest security updates, and makes it easier for the American embassy or nearest consulate to contact you in an emergency.”
